mission & method
We teach youth to Be the Light of Christ to Guatemala through Discipleship and Service by encouraging involvement in service projects--demonstrating service to Christ through service to others--and with weekly meetings where youth develop deep friendships and grow in their faith.
Our Treasurer, Nathan Day, is an intern from Bethel University. He is a bi-national missionary kid from Costa Rica! We are excited to work with him until his graduation until May 2017.
2003 - Kali Pliego studies abroad in Guatemala and realizes God is calling her to mission.
2005 - Kali moved to Guatemala with a vision for youth ministry that combines faith and action.
2006 - Se Luz (Ministerio Cristiano Se Luz) has its first official service projects. Kali teams up with Romeo Sactic, hands over leadership of Se Luz to him, and moves home to Minnesota in December.
2008 - First annual 'board' trip to Guatemala. Kali leads a group of 3 supporters to see Se Luz firsthand. That group becomes the original board or directors.
2009 - Se Luz Ministries, Inc. is awarded non-profit public charity status by the IRS (501c3).
2016 - Se Luz celebrates 10 years of ministry in Guatemala!
I don't know about you, but when I love something or someone, I become it's advocate. I will defend it and strive to protect it's most basic inherent value. I make personal sacrifices to ensure it reaches it's ultimate health and potential. This is what I understand is the Jesus way to love.
Our Secretary is a Theology student at North Central Bible College, and a Youth Pastor at Spirit of Hope United Methodist Church. David is also a product of STORM camp.
Kali Pliego learned to serve Jesus by serving others at a young age at STORM camp. As an adult, she was challenged to apply that lesson in real life, wherever God showed her. God brought Kali to Guatemala. She fell in love. The rest is history.
Our Chairman of the board is a retired finance director with General Mills.
Romeo (and his wife, Berta) has lived in Santiago Sacatepequez, Guatemala his whole life. He loves his community and the youth who live there. With his leadership and professional background as a contractor, he brings passion and technical know how to the job.

"Surely I tell you, whatever you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did it for me"

Bringing the Light of Christ to Guatemala through Discipleship and Service
In recent years, we have had an increase in service projects focusing on individual families--namely those of widows and their children. With $3000, Se Luz youth can build a two-room block house with secure windows and doors. In addition, we continue to seek out projects that are collaborative in nature.
